July Board Meeting Update

Hi all Lions,

This month, we’re starting a new section on our website featuring news and highlights from the most recent meeting of your Club’s Board of Directors.  Our last meeting was on Monday, July 19.

-          Trainers - We’ve reached agreement with our Head trainer, Cody Bruce Smith to provide trainer services throughout the coming season.  Cody and his well -qualified crew will be in attendance at all our practices and will be in attendance at all Minor Bantam, Bantam, Midget and Majors games.  Cody will also maintain a full inventory of equipment and supplies at the Lions home field.

-          The Canteen – We have a couple of mums - come on dads you can do it too! -

who’ve generously stepped forward to help organize things around our canteen.  This is great but, it’s big job and we still need volunteers  - especially people willing to oversee running the canteen (with other volunteers to prepare food & do sales ) for say, one day a weekend.  If we don’t get more help we may have to close the canteen for some home weekends.  We also need volunteers to run the canteen during practices – just open it, make coffee & hot chocolate, sell drinks & candy bars - while your child is practicing.  Pick a night and let your team manager know.  He or she will then contact either Richard

-          The Club is still looking for a volunteer Field Manager – someone who can oversee maintenance of our field ( watering as required ) and can communicate with the City Parks Department when larger issues arise.  This is an ideal job for someone’s retired Grandparent.  Training provided.  If you can help out with this, please contact Richard at ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. -          Financial Report – our treasurer Greg reports that our finances are in good shape – better then last year at this time by several thousand dollars.

Because of a rule change, please note that an extra cost this year is that we have to purchase blue & gold game socks for all players except Terminators to identify them as either “offence” or “defence”.  These will be available through team coaches or managers at a cost to you of $ 5.00  which is  roughly half retail.

-          Facilities – Additions to our field lighting are in progress.  Note the new lights mounted on the scoreboard.  A new pole and more lights will also be installed to better illuminate our second field and practice area.

-          Player boxes – renovations have been completed on our main field player boxes.  The mud & sand has been replaced with chipped rubber – should help keep everybody  - & everything - a little cleaner.  Coaches won’t have to wear rubber boots any more.

-          Coaches – all teams at the Minor level now have complete staffs.

-          Schedule:  Normally, the Minor Football League schedule would be out by now and we could let you know when your child(ren) would be playing.  Unfortunately, due to an unforeseen computer problem at the League office, the schedule won’t now be available until the end of July.

-          We need a more powerful computer to run the reader board on our scoreboard.

( the one we have came over on the Ark!).  If anyone has an old laptop – or even desktop – they’re not using, maybe consider donating it to your club.  It will count as a”volunteer “act.

-          Jim Duncan told us about an end of season ( November – indoor, I believe  ) tournament in Thunder Bay & has suggested that maybe we consider blending our 2 Pee Wee teams to make an all-star ( likely mostly 12 year-olds ) team.  There would be some small cost involved – we’d need to hire a bus and so on _ but I know from experience doing the same thing taking a Bantam team to Calgary a few years ago, that this is a big thrill for the kids ( and their parents!) and is a huge team-builder for the coming year.  Think about it parents.  Talk to your sons & daughters.  Let your coaches know if you’re interested.

-          Yours truly & a number of others from our Club will be representing the Fort Garry Lions at a Football  Manitoba Hall of Fame Luncheon later in August.  At least three Lions alumni will be inducted.

And finally, if you’ve enjoyed reading this update and/or have suggestions for improvements, please drop me a line.  We’re always open to new ideas and love to know what you think about your football club.

Until next month, cheers to all,

Richard  ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it )
